The Be Do Have Model: The natural and effortless path to achieving your business goals.

ree

We’ve all heard the rumours- the path to getting your business to where you want it to go is paved with hard work and goal setting.

Having now assisted many budding entrepreneurs, I can tell you that this isn’t exactly the whole story. Whilst goal setting and hard work are indeed crucial aspects of achieving professional success, there is in fact a relatively little known starting point that will not only clarify and set you on a path to achieving your business dreams, it will make the journey flow naturally and even enjoyably. Added bonus: this method also holds transformative power for your personal life.

It’s called the Be Do Have method, but before I break down this revelatory approach, I’ll first clarify the approaches to success people usually favour.

The first we’ll deem ‘The victim’ and they specialise in a Have Do Be methodology. The victim feels like they need to have certain things (e.g. money, spare time, support) in order to do certain things (e.g. start a business) so they can be a certain way (e.g. generous, content and fulfilled). They tend to be consistently waiting for external circumstances to magically align before they can move forward.

The second approach is what I like to call ‘The Battler’. Battlers exhibit a Do Have Be tactic- they feel like they need to do certain things (e.g. work extremely hard, get on top of the to do list) in order to have certain things (e.g. business growth, success) so they can be a certain way (e.g. happy and accomplished). Because there’s always more to do, the worker never quite arrives at ‘Be’ and tends to be overworked and tired, resulting in a lack of focus and clarity.

And now, let me introduce you to the Be Do Have Model. It’s where we choose to inhabit that state we’re aiming for now. We don’t blame less than ideal circumstances, or wait till we’ve crossed an ever-receding finish line to inhabit the feelings/attributes we want- we decide to be that in this moment. We do this by thinking about the goals we want to achieve, and then asking ourselves what we think accomplishing this goal would give us (e.g. freedom, joy, abundance). We then step into that state of being and from this empowered state we take action. You’ll find that this doing inspired by being lands you the things you always wanted to have.

In my business coaching practice, I help people utilise this life-altering principle and one of the ways I do so is via a ‘values session’. In a values session, the client and I first come up with a list of the values that they feel are most important for their business. We then rank them in importance from high to low and detail how these values would look. Below is an example of an incredible value session I had with a client recently. It demonstrates beautifully how one value flows into and supports the next:

Quality – Our business delivers quality products, leading to…

Success – which means that this business can maintain itself by delivering…

Excellence – we deliver excellence in our luxury products by knowing that…

Understanding – our customer satisfaction is a key metric.

Growth – this business is constantly advancing and growing.

Adaptability – we are adaptable in our ideas and ways to solve problems.

Commitment – we are committed to our brand and then our customers to our brand.

Collaboration – by collaborating we know what our customers need most.

Popularity – which leads in turn to our customers helping us create a popular brand.

In summary, the Be Do Have Model invites us to remember that we have the ability to step into a different way of being at any point, and our way of being greatly impacts our outcomes. It reminds us that we needn’t force the realisation of our goals through struggle and suffering to the extent that we do. Instead, we can jump into the flow of life and gratefully allow its currents to help carry us to where we want to go.
